Overview - Unit 1: Sitework and Foundations
In this unit, students will learn about scheduling considerations for construction as well as critical building methodologies and requirements. There is also a significant focus on sitework and foundations.
Session 1: Project Set-Up, Surveying & Layout
Project Set-up
This session describes the initial setup of a project and the people involved. Additionally, students will learn about site utilization and what is needed up front. By the end of this training, students will have general knowledge about how to successfully set up a project before construction begins.
Surveying and Layout Methodologies
Students will be provided with information to help them understand the difference between the surveying and layout process. This training will outline the step-by-step process for surveying and layouts for projects.
Session 2: Project Scheduling
Project Scheduling
This session will provide students with an understanding of the true flow of the sequence using real-life examples. This session will also outline the steps needed to ensure that project scheduling is effectively done for a smoothly run project.
Session 3: Excavation / Trenching & Site Utilities
Excavation & Trenching
This session discusses excavation and trenching safety. It describes the role of a competent person, identifies hazards associated with excavations as well as the methods for protecting employees from cave-ins. It also covers employer requirements to protect workers from excavation hazards.
Site Utilities
This session will introduce students to the basics of site utilities. Site utilities are building systems that usually come under some form of public control. These utilities generally include electricity, gas, water and sewage and communication services. Additionally, they may include irrigation systems, steam lines, medical gases, inert gases and other liquids/gases required for laboratory operations. There are many considerations that must be made when dealing with site utilities.
Session 4: Foundations
Foundation
This session covers different foundation (soil) types. The foundations are chosen by the structural engineer. Best practices of each will be discussed.
Session 5: Shoring Systems
Shoring Systems
This session provides an overall explanation of the different types of shoring and best practices of installation of shoring systems. Students will learn about earthwork shoring, the role of the superintendent in shoring, beam and lag systems, battered piers, grout column/soil nails and underpinning.
Structural Shotcrete and Blindside Waterproofing
This session provides students with a practical understanding of executing structural shotcrete and blindside waterproofing for 0-100 feet underground/below-grade excavation projects. Students will examine a comprehensive overview of the concepts, planning, techniques, and best practices for scheduling, sitework, building methodology, and environmental impact.
